NO Spanking Today!!!
I'm back with another "grandsonism"! I had to share this. I don't share EVERY single cute thing "they" do but sometimes, well, sometimes what they do is cuter than cute. At least to me...but then I'm the grandmother. Yesterday the gas people delivered propane to my daughter's house and someone had to be there and that someone was, of course, me. Well...knowing that the gas man (do they call them that?) would be tinkering with stuff on the tank as well as giving me a propane use tutorial...and I do hate gas...I asked my mother...the boys great grandmother...to ride along so I could be educated on the tank, etc. and not have to worry about the little ones. Anyway, the older one...he's 3...wouldn't mind great grandma so she told him she would spank him. He told her she couldn't do that. My spunky mom tells him to just watch and see...at which point he tells her..."You just can't do it!" She asked him why? And putting his little hand to his forehead to prove his point he told her he did not feel well. Alarmed now that maybe the wee tot was coming down with something she asked him, "What's wrong with you little sweetheart?" to which he replied with much sincerity..."You know. I have the 'ritis." (For those of you not kid savvy, 'ritis is kidspeak for arthritis.) And I thought he never paid attention to me!!! My mom and I both...grandma and great grand could not help but laugh and his mission to avoid a spanking was accomplished. (All in a kid's day with Grandma!)

Fall is here. We've actually been feeling it to some degree for weeks now. Some of my bushes are almost leaf bare already. Spider lilies are in full bloom several weeks early. Not only did yesterday's date remind me that fall had now officially begun but there on the calendar in my own writing was a message that I didn't have to be reminded of. My baby turned 20. Yes, I now have no teenagers. In many ways it doesn't seem possible that he is 20 years young. I find it such a paradox that when children are little there are days when moms believe they'll just never grow up but then suddenly they do. And it doesn't seem to happen so much in degrees as it does in just one massive leap. He called me yesterday. Something he rarely does while he is at school. I think he felt it too. Change. I can still remember how he used to hold my hand when we went places but then the day came that he would hold it for a few seconds but then let go and then of course came the day when he didn't hold it at all. He's back to holding my hand again. This time I think he does it for me. Every new season brings change. Every birthday brings memories of the previous years. Every smile on my child's face, for he will always be my child, makes me happy too. For every dream that comes true for him, so does one of mine. Cherish the memories, make the most of today, look forward with faith to the future, and every time your child takes your hand, hold that feeling dear to your heart. Have a GREAT week.

Well, we've survived hurricane Gustav and today the sun came out looking mighty fine after days of rain. I had four relatives from near New Orleans come up to stay with me. A full house...but it wasn't really that bad. We had put in a good supply of everything we could think of and it wasn't needed too much after all but always better to be prepared. I know this might sound silly to you but as a person of experience...well, I'd filled two garbage cans with water just in case we lost electricity at the water station and therefore had no water. Oh, I bought 4 cases of water for drinking but this particular water had a special purpose. It was to be used to flush the toilets...just in case. I couldn't imagine that many people in my house and not being able to flush them (the toilets not the people). It also seemed more practical than going to the pond with buckets to bring back water. I suppose you could say I really was prepared for the worst. I'm glad things didn't come down to it...and I'm not emptying them out just yet. Ike hasn't made up his mind yet!!! Have a great week.
